Web-based envelope budgeting with visual envelope cards, shared plans and optional bank sync
NeoBudget is an online envelope budgeting service with iOS and Android apps. Income is allocated into visual envelope cards, transactions can be split and dragged into categories, and up to five people can share a budget. A free tier (10 envelopes, 1 account) is available; bank sync and receipt scanning are on the top paid plan.
Best for: Couples and small households who want a simple shared envelope budget, and are fine with file imports or paying for the top tier to get bank sync
Envelope cards, split transactions, drag-and-drop allocation, memorized transactions, shared budgets, file import, bank sync and receipt scan (Complete plan).
NeoBudget is a web-based envelope budgeting service with iPhone and Android apps. You give income a job by allocating it into colored envelope cards, then spend against those envelopes. It has a permanent free tier, two paid tiers, and bank sync only at the top tier. This review is based on the vendor's site, its privacy and terms pages, app-store listings and one older third-party review. It is not months of hands-on use. I did not sign up, start a trial or connect a bank.
Envelope budgeting means each category (groceries, rent, gifts) holds a set amount of money, and when it runs out you stop spending there. NeoBudget shows these as visual cards. You allocate income to envelopes, tag each transaction to one (drag and drop is supported, and so are split transactions), and an overspent envelope shows up negative in red on the home screen. One vendor testimonial praises exactly that red-negative signal, but vendor-hosted testimonials are marketing, so treat it accordingly.
An older third-party review quotes a single paid plan at $4.95/mo or $49.95/yr, so prices have moved since; the vendor's current page is what I used. The terms say fees are non-refundable and may change, and subscriptions renew automatically unless you turn that off.
Manual entry and file import are available on every plan. The vendor's own comparison page says imports accept QIF, OFX and QFX files (that page is marketing, so I did not treat it as independent). Automatic sync sits on the Complete plan and, per the privacy page, runs through Plaid. Receipt scanning and AI-powered help may be processed by OpenAI, and the page says you can use the app without either. The policy says personal information is not sold or traded, but non-personally-identifiable visitor information may be shared for marketing. Data is stored in the United States. The older third-party review said there was no bank sync at all, so this is a newer feature; I could not test how well it works.
The current iPhone/iPad app requires iOS 15.1 or later. The App Store history shows a rebuilt app in May 2024, with import, budget editing, tags and envelope notes added through early 2026. The Android app is on Google Play (100+ downloads when I looked). Both apps connect to the web account rather than replacing it.
A simple, visual envelope budget with a genuine free tier and fair paid prices, but the most useful automation is locked to the priciest plan and there is little outside feedback to lean on. Try the free tier first.
