> Web budgeting app with custom categories, keyword auto-categorizing, and optional bank sync.
Source: https://budgetingapps.org/apps/spend-space (researched 2026-10-14). Research-based review, not hands-on testing.

*An iPhone app named 'Spendspace: AI Expense Tracker' (different developer name, released April 2026) shows up in App Store search. No link to spendspace.io found; the vendor FAQ says it has no mobile app. This listing covers the web app at spendspace.io.*

## Summary

SpendSpace is a browser-based personal finance app where users define their own spending categories and keyword rules that auto-categorize imported or synced transactions. It offers optional zero-based budgets, category spending limits with email alerts, goals, subscription detection and a what-if scenario tool. Plans differ by data source: CSV only, US bank sync, or international sync.

**Best for:** People who want to define their own category scheme and rules and are fine with a web-only app.

## Cons

- Web only; the FAQ says a mobile app is "not yet" available
- One budget per account; the FAQ says multiple budgets are not available yet
- No free tier after the 3-month trial; the pages tie the trial to a promo code, so exact terms are unclear
- Very small independent footprint: no user reviews on a software directory and no outside coverage found beyond the developer's own posts
- Site copy is inconsistent: bank provider (Teller vs Stripe/SimpleFIN/Lunch Flow), promo codes, and support email domain differ across pages
- Privacy policy dated Dec 2024 does not name the AI or investment-data providers other pages mention; SOC 2 claim covers the host, not an audit of the app itself
- Budgeting is secondary: the design centers on categorizing and viewing spending, with budgets optional

## Our review

### Short version

SpendSpace is a browser-based personal finance app built around one idea: you define your own spending categories and attach keywords to them, and every past and future transaction that matches is sorted automatically. On top of that it offers optional zero-based budgets, plain category spending limits with email alerts, goals, subscription detection, a what-if scenario tool, a net-worth view and AI-written insights. Plans differ by data source: CSV only, US bank sync, or international sync.

**Quick profile, not a full review.** Built from the vendor's own site, help pages, privacy policy and public listings, last checked 2026-10-06. No hands-on testing: I did not sign up, start a trial or connect a bank.

### How it works

Every imported or synced transaction lands in an "Other" bucket until you categorize it and pick a keyword (a word, phrase or full description). The vendor's quick-start guide also tells you to mark credit-card payments and transfers between your own accounts as ignored so spending is not counted twice. Budgeting is optional: you can assign expected income across categories zero-based style, or just set limits and get alerts. Accounts typed as "Savings" are tracked by balance only; "Checking" feeds the budget. Investments and assets such as bonds sit in a separate net-worth area, not in the day-to-day budget.

### Cost

- CSV Import $2.99/mo (manual entry plus bank CSV upload, all features)

- US Banking $4.99/mo (bank sync via Stripe Financial Connections, investment accounts via SnapTrade)

- International $3.99/mo (SimpleFIN and Lunch Flow connections; the vendor says the lower price is because you pay the connection provider separately)

- Annual billing is offered ("save 17%") but the annual dollar amounts are not in the page text I could read.

- 3-month trial on all plans per the pricing page; the pages tie it to a promo code entered at signup, and a different code appears on a comparison page, so the exact terms are not confirmed. A software directory still says no free trial. There is no free tier afterwards.

- The vendor's comparison table quotes rival prices "as of 2024"; treat that as marketing.

### What is distinct

The keyword-driven, user-defined category system and the dashboard-first design (spending patterns first, budget second) are the angle. The vendor does market itself as a cheaper alternative to better-known apps, but its own FAQ says it is not a clone and the method (keyword rules, optional budget) is different in practice.

### Privacy and security

The vendor says data is encrypted with AES-256 at rest and TLS in transit, keys are held in Google Cloud KMS, bank links are read-only, data is not sold, and you can export or delete your data (deletion within 30 days per the privacy policy). Its security page says the hosting provider is SOC 2 certified; I found no audit of SpendSpace itself. The privacy policy I read is dated December 2024 and does not name the AI provider (the site says Google Gemini) or the investment-data provider that other pages mention, so it may lag the product.

### Not confirmed

Annual prices; founding year and who runs it (no named team found); a product changelog or release dates (the blog is active through September 2026, but blog posts are not release notes); bill reminders; debt payoff planning; multi-currency beyond a currency setting; shared budgets; export file formats; the iOS/Android situation (the vendor FAQ says a mobile app is "not yet" available). A developer's own forum post also describes a retirement planner and an AI chat assistant; I could not open that thread and did not see them on the vendor pages I read, so they are not counted.

### Mixed signals on the vendor's own pages

- The home-page body text mentions bank connections via Teller; the pricing page, FAQ and logos point to Stripe, SimpleFIN and Lunch Flow. I treated the pricing page as current.

- Support email uses spendspace.io on most pages but spendspace.app on the terms page.

### Independent feedback

Very little found: a software directory lists no user reviews, and the outside discussion I found is posts by the developer. Treat reliability, support and longevity as unproven.

### Name check

An iPhone app called "Spendspace: AI Expense Tracker" (a different developer name, released April 2026) appears in App Store search. I found no link between it and spendspace.io, whose FAQ says there is no mobile app. This listing covers the web app at spendspace.io only.

Ratings are set separately against a shared rubric.
