## Pros

- Low price: $4/mo or $40/yr, or a $60 lifetime plan limited to the first 500 members, with every feature on every plan
- True envelope budgeting: allocate income to envelopes, move money between them, savings goals, and reusable allocation plans
- Credit cards get a linked debt envelope: card spending moves money into it, and a payment between connected accounts lowers it (per the vendor's blog; not tested)
- Debt Center builds a snowball, avalanche or custom payoff plan from card and loan accounts already in the budget; the extra payment can follow an envelope, and a what-if panel moves the debt-free date (vendor-described; not tested)
- Repeating transactions (weekly, every N weeks, monthly, twice a month, yearly) show on a calendar, enter the register as pending a few days early, and are taken over by the matching bank import (vendor-described; not tested)
- Each budget can have its own currency and number format (symbol, decimals, separators, live preview), handy for a home and an overseas or business budget
- Hosted, so there is nothing to install or maintain; 34-day free trial with no credit card, per the vendor
- Review-first transaction inbox, plus bank sync that shows a reconcile breakdown and flags mismatches
- Shared budgets with family/team members and multiple separate budgets (one Reddit user runs a business and personal budget side by side)
- Amazon order matching via a Chrome extension adds item names to card charges; a Reddit user called it a game changer
- Active development and a public changelog and roadmap; a Reddit user also reports quick support replies
- Official MCP server with read-only, expiring keys and no funds movement (a Nous Research collaborator praised its security design, Aug 2026); the public REST API uses revocable, expiring keys

## Cons

- Bank sync costs extra: SimpleFIN is $1.50/mo or $15/yr paid to SimpleFIN; Plaid is $3/mo or $30/yr as an add-on.
- Debt Center and repeating transactions are recent, so independent feedback is limited; debt APR, minimum payment and due day are entered by hand for manually added debts.
- The iPhone/iPad app has 2 App Store ratings, currently 5.0; that is still a very small sample. Android is on Google Play with 50+ downloads, but its public listing did not show a review count when checked.
- One-person company and a small user community.
- Very little independent feedback found; vendor-site testimonials are not independent.
- No investment holdings tracking; each budget uses one currency, without conversion or exchange rates.
- Self-hosting is a roadmap item, not available today.

## Our review

### A note on bias

EnvelopeBudget is my favorite app, and it is this site's Editor's Pick. I have applied the same standard as every other app.

This is a research-based profile, not hands-on testing. I reviewed the vendor's public pages, changelog and privacy policy, plus the store listings; I did not sign up, start a trial or connect a bank.

### What it is

EnvelopeBudget is hosted envelope budgeting: income is assigned to spending and savings envelopes, then transactions are tracked against those balances. It includes reports, shared budgets, debt planning, repeating transactions, manual entry and file import.

### Tracking accounts

Tracking or off-budget accounts are shipped. The October 2026 roadmap marks them live, and the October 11 changelog says their activity no longer prompts for an envelope or blocks inbox cleanup. Current owner guidance confirms reconciliation adjustments in a Tracking account do not need an envelope or change the budget.

### Pricing and bank sync

The vendor lists plans at $4 per month, $40 per year, or $60 lifetime for the first 500 members, plus a 34-day trial. Bank sync is optional and costs extra: SimpleFIN is listed at $1.50 per month or $10 per year on the vendor page ($15 per year on SimpleFIN's own site); Plaid is $3 per month or $30 per year. Plaid bank sync is enabled in the web, iOS and Android apps, per current owner confirmation.

### Platforms and caveats

The product is available on web, iOS and Android. The App Store currently shows two ratings averaging 5.0, a small sample; Google Play shows 50+ downloads, with no public review count found. Each budget uses one currency; currency conversion is not confirmed. Self-hosting remains on the roadmap. This is a one-person operation, and independent feedback is limited.

### Privacy and MCP

The vendor says financial data is processed through Plaid or SimpleFIN and bank credentials are not stored by EnvelopeBudget. It documents OAuth 2.1 browser sign-in and dynamic client registration for MCP; connections are read-only by default, with optional categorization permissions separately approved. These are vendor statements, not an independent security audit.

### Bottom line

EnvelopeBudget's appeal is hosted envelope budgeting with transparent base prices, optional bank sync on web and mobile, and tracking accounts that keep assets or liabilities outside envelope balances. People needing self-hosting or mixed-currency conversion should check those limits carefully.
